O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high-school student. She made it into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement about her performance. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. However, she was a major loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by this and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil, who had been consistently delivering stellar performance since then, never fell below the three top performers. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced to the final two in the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
